FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Missing Hunter Found in Redfield

October 8, 2003

First notification came at 0344 from the Onondaga 911 center.  They sent a page to call Fire Control.  Car 1 sent out the subsequent search notification at 0347.  Wilderness was requested as Mutual Aid to a search in Redfield for a lost hunter.  The team was requested report to the Redfield Fire Department at 0700.  Subject was a hunter in his late 30’s.  He was last seen leaving work at 1500 hours on 10/7.  He was going bow hunting after work.  He drove his car to a spot off of O’Hara Rd. and parked it there.  Then he was going to go to one of two tree stands to hunt.  He failed to come in that evening and was reported missing by his family.  Local fire volunteers, the NY State Police, Forest Ranger Scott Jackson and the Pioneer SAR team searched that night until about 0300 when the search was called off for the night and further resources were requested.

Cars 3 and 4 (Kevin Porter and Jason Baleno) were able to respond to Redfield for the search at 0700 hours.  Along with Sue Fox from Pioneer they had been assigned the designation Team 3.  Their job was to lay a string line demarcating the northern side of a grid running east from O’Hara Rd. to an unnamed tributary of the Mad River.  Then they were to proceed to the south along the western bank to where the stream intersected the state land boundary, then proceed west back to O’Hara Rd., cutting for sign of the subject the whole way.  Just as they were putting on their gear in the field they were told to hold position as the subject had been found.  Time was 0900 hours.  He had walked out after daylight and was found walking along State Route 27 by a State Police Deputy.  He was brought to the command trailer and checked for medical conditions.  He checked out fine and was sent home with family on scene.

Communications on scene were on 155.160 MHz.

Report prepared by Kevin Porter
