Lost in the Woods Presentations

One of the public service activities that the Wilderness Search and Rescue Team engages in is making presentations of the Lost in the Woods program designed and written by the Search and Rescue Team of British Colombia (SARBC).  This program is written for children, generally from about 5-10 years of age.  Over the past 7 years, Wilderness has done this presentation for public schools, scout groups, home school groups and other organized children’s groups all around the region.

One such presentation was done for the Sherburne-Earlville second graders in October.   This was a return trip.  Every year just before hunting season the teachers like to have a presentation for the children about what to do if they get lost in the woods.  This is because many of them accompany their parents on hunting trips.

The presentation consists of a booklet, survival kit and a 22-minute video.  The booklet discusses the 9 points to remember if you get lost.  These are:

1.      Stay together if with a friend or pet. DO NOT separate.

2.      Stay in one place or area. DO NOT WANDER.

3.      Keep warm.

4.      Find a cozy waiting place, Not a Hiding Place.

5.      Put out something bright for searchers to see.

6.      Look bigger for searchers.

7.      Do not lie on the bare ground

8.      Do Not Eat Anything you are not sure of.

9.      Stay away from large rivers or lakes.

The presenter discusses each of these points with the children.  They are encouraged to ask questions and discuss feelings about the woods and how to deal with those feelings.

Then the presenter brings out a “survival kit” that can be easily made from household items. The items are displayed and discussed.  These items are listed in the booklet.  The children get to keep the booklet and take it home to discuss with their families.  Then the presenter shows the video.  It is a short movie about a young boy named Calvin who gets lost.  The children are told to watch for the things that Calvin does correctly and for what he does that he should not be doing.

In September another presentation was given for a Webelos Scout Den in Liverpool.  They had lost their scoutmaster when he left the area for work and they have tapped into the team for assistance in earning some of their badges.  And earlier in the summer the team did a presentation for the Village Green scouts near Baldwinsville.

The goal is to make children aware of what they can do to make it easier to find them if they become lost and how to get by until they are found by searchers.  It is also meant to keep children from being afraid of the woods and give them some confidence tempered with the knowledge of how to remain safe.  The team can be contacted to arrange for a presentation of Lost in the Woods for your organization.
